Ultrasound (also called sonography or ultrasonography) is a noninvasive diagnostic imaging test. It uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time pictures or video of internal organs or other tissues, such as blood vessels. An ultrasound picture is called a sonogram. Ultrasound devices operate with frequencies from 20 kHz up to several gigahertz. Ultrasound is a useful way of examining many of the body's internal organs. An ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to make an image of a person's internal body structures. Doctors commonly use ultrasound to study a developing fetus (unborn baby), a person's abdominal and pelvic organs, muscles and tendons, or their heart and blood vessels.

Ultrasound machines consist of a computer console, video monitor and an attached transducer. The transducer is a small hand-held device that resembles a microphone. Some exams may use different transducers (with different capabilities) during a single exam. The transducer sends out inaudible, high-frequency sound waves into the body and listens for the returning echoes.
