Surgical gowns and other apparel (masks, footwear, gloves) serve two purposes: 1. protecting patients from microorganisms carried by the surgical team or patients themselves, and 2. protecting healthcare providers from contact with infectious microorganisms harbored by the patient.
Isolation Gowns are made with outer layers that are cloth-like and comfortable, yet tough and abrasion-resistant, and an inner layer that's an intricate web of fine fibers that forms a barrier to liquids. The Isolation Gown provides protection against splashing and spraying of body fluids.
Spunbond polypropylene makes a good outer/inner layer as it is a strong, durable, yet breathable fabric. In addition, spunbonds are flame-retardant and have antistatic properties, and can therefore be used for increased ultraviolet and gamma ray protection.
