Heat and Moisture Exchangers are devices used in mechanically ventilated patients intended to help prevent complications due to drying of the respiratory mucosa, such as mucus plugging and endotracheal tube occlusion. Heat and Moisture exchanger filter is designed to enhance the protection against airborne microbes like bacteria virus etc. It is commonly employed in ICU for ventilation purposes to ensure proper humidification of inspired air.
Heat and Moisture Exchanger (HME) in current use are generally combined with a microbiological filter, hence they are called HME filters (HMEF).
