Intravenous (IV) cannulation is a technique in which a cannula is placed inside a vein to provide venous access. Venous access allows sampling of blood, as well as administration of fluids, medications, parenteral nutrition, chemotherapy, and blood products. It is used to facilitate blood sampling, deliver essential fluids, blood products and medication.
There are several sizes of intravenous cannulas from 14 to 26 gauge. The higher the gauge number, the smaller the cannula. Different sized cannulas move liquid through them at different rates, known as flow rates.
24G is a straight IV cannula meant for paediatric and neonatal use. It comes with a butterfly needle and is suitable for patients with capillary brittleness, children and where a delicate and non-traumatic needle is required.
Insertion of an intravenous (IV) cannula involves connecting a tube into a patient's vein so that infusions can be inserted directly into the patient’s bloodstream. Cannulas (also known as venflons) are available in various colours, each of which correspond to the size of the tube. The required size depends on:
- What will be infused, for example: colloid, crystalloid, blood products or medications.
- Or, at the rate the infusion is to run.
